Purpose Statement:
The job of Automotive Mechanic is done for the purpose/s of determining needed repairs and/or replacements on district vehicles; ensuring the availability of vehicles in safe operating condition; and providing written documentation of repairs to meet district, state and federal requirements.
This job reports to the Trades Manager.
Essential Functions
- Conducts periodic preventive maintenance inspections of equipment (e.g. road tests, visual inspections) for the purpose of identifying any potential maintenance needs, and following preventative maintenance schedules.
- Diagnoses potential vehicle and/or heavy equipment malfunctions for the purpose of determining needed vehicle repairs and/or replacements.
- Inspects work upon completion for the purpose of determining necessary repairs have been made and that equipment is in proper operating condition.
- Maintains heavy equipment and vehicles (e.g. cars, trucks, school busses, activity busses, tractors, back hoes, forklifts, mixers, skip loaders, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of equipment in safe operating condition.
- Maintains tools and/or equipment for the purpose of ensuring the availability of equipment in safe operating condition.
- Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
- Repairs heavy equipment (e.g. automotive vehicles) for the purpose of ensuring availability of equipment in safe operating condition.
- Transports various items (e.g. tools, equipment, supplies, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of materials required at job site.
- Coordinates with administration and other trades for the purpose of completing projects/work orders efficiently.
- Responds to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns.
Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications and must have CDL License.

SKILLS are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: considerable knowledge of the operating principles of internal combustion engines; adjusting/repairing the generating, ignition, and electrical wiring system in automotive equipment and extensive knowledge of mechanical tools and equipment ABILITY is required to schedule activities and/or meetings; gather and/or collate data; and consider a wide variety of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing specific, defined processes; and operate equipment using a variety of processes. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals; work with specific, job-related data; and utilize a wide variety of types of job-related equipment. In working with others, Problem solving with data may require independent interpretation; and problem solving with equipment is significant. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: ability to diagnose the causes of operating defects in automotive and heavy equipment and to delegate repair orders/assignments to mechanical staff.
Responsibility
Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods; directing other persons within a small work unit; and tracking budget expenditures. Utilization of some resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. There is some opportunity to significantly impact the Organization’s services.
Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: Generally the job requires 45% sitting, 5% walking, and 50% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.
