Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma required

Previous supervisory experience preferred

Minimum of three years progressive experience in the construction or repair of secondary electrical systems; or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Considerable knowledge of the standard practices and methods of the electrical trade

Ability to locate and correct defects in the electrical systems and equipment

Ability to read and work from blueprints and sketches

Ability to train apprentices in the electrical trade

Skill in the use and care of the tools of the trade

Outstanding references from current and former supervisors

Satisfactory SLED (SC Law Enforcement Division) report

 

Salary Range:   Maintenance Salary Scale/Technician

 

Length of Contract:    12 months/8 hours per day

    

Starting Date:    Immediately upon selection

JOB DESCRIPTION

 

ELECTRICIAN

Purpose Statement:

 

The job of Electrician is done for the purpose/s of installation, maintenance and repair of primarily secondary electrical systems, equipment and fixtures and maintaining electrical systems and components in safe operating condition; providing information on proper operation of electrical systems; identifying location of existing electrical systems and determining the efficient installation of additional systems.

 

This job reports to the Electrician Foreman.

 

 

Essential Functions

  • Analyzes drawings (e.g. blueprints, sketches or diagrams) for the purpose of identifying location of new and existing electrical systems and determining the efficient installation of additional systems.
  • Attends meetings as assigned for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions.
  • Coordinates with administration and other trades for the purpose of completing projects/work orders efficiently.
  • Installs electrical systems (e.g. under ground electrical conduit, fire alarms, switchboards, audio visual alarms, etc.) for the purpose of providing updated, enhanced and/or upgraded electrical capabilities.
  • Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
  • Prepares documentation for the purpose of providing written support and/or conveying information.
  • Records work orders, inspections, and purchases for the purpose of documenting information for other personnel.
  • Repairs electrical systems including communications, overloads, lighting fixtures, etc. for the purpose of ensuring proper/safe operation of equipment.
  • Repairs various items, systems and/or components for the purpose of ensuring that items are available and in safe working condition.
  • Responds to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns.
  • Transports various items (e.g. tools, equipment, supplies, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of materials required at job site.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

 

SKILLS are required to perform multiple, highly complex, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: drawing plans and/or sketches for lower level electrician staff to implement; planning and managing projects, adhering to safety practices and administering first aid.

 

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform algebra and/or geometry; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and solve practical problems.  Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: considerable knowledge of the design, installation and maintenance of electrical instruments, apparatus and equipment.

 

ABILITY is required to schedule a significant number of activities, meetings, and/or events; routinely gather, collate, and/or classify data; and consider a wide variety of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate equipment using a variety of processes.  Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with similar types of data; and utilize a variety of types of job-related equipment.  In working with others, problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans.   Problem solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate to significant.  Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: working with detailed information/data, displaying mechanical aptitude, setting priorities and adapting to changing work priorities.

 

 

Responsibility

Responsibilities include: working independently under broad organizational guidelines to achieve unit objectives; directing other persons within a small work unit; and tracking budget expenditures.  Utilization of resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; significant stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity.  Generally the job requires 10% sitting, 10% walking, and 80% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and some hazardous conditions.

 

Experience: Job related experience with increasing levels of responsibility is required.

 

Education: Targeted job related education that meets organization’s prerequisite requirements.

 

Required Testing: Pre-employment TB test      

 

Certificates & Licenses: Electrician License preferred or willing to take classes/workshops to perform duties

 

Clearances: Satisfactory SLED (SC Law Enforcement Division) report; outstanding references from former and current employers

 

FLSA Status: Non-exempt
